Ten Tips for Making Sure Your Contractor Is on the Level

  1. Hire only licensed contractors.
  2. Check the contractor’s license number by utilizing our Online Contractor Search or by contacting the Nevada State Contractors Board
  3. Get three references and review past work.
  4. Get at least three bids.
  5. Get a written contract and do not sign anything until you
    completely understand the terms.
  6. Down payment cannot exceed $1,000 or 10% of contract price, whichever is less. A down payment may only exceed this amount if the contractor posts a Consumer Protection Bond with the Board in the amount of $100,000, or if the contractor was previously granted relief of the requirment to post a license bond. You can check your contractor’s bond status on the Board’s website.
  7. Don’t let payments get ahead of the work. Keep a record of all payments.
Don’t make a final payment until you are satisfied with the job.
  8. Don’t pay cash.
  9. Keep a job file of all papers relating to your project.
  10. Check the contractor’s record with the Better Business Bureau in your area or visit their website at www.bbb.org
